Reducing Waste
Waste reduction is central to Caesars Entertainment's commitment to environmental sustainability. We are proud to be the first national gaming-entertainment company to join EPA WasteWise, and gratified that the EPA recognized our hard work with a WasteWise New Partner Gold Achievement Award in 2010.
Caesars has set these waste reduction targets for its resorts enterprise-wide:
- Target: 25% diversion from landfill in 2014
- Target: 50% diversion from landfill in 2020
- Updated Target: 35% diversion from landfill in 2014
It has taken longer than we anticipated to aggregate waste data across all our properties. We expect to be able to provide data on progress toward our targets in 2013 or 2014.

A number of recent initiatives will help us achieve these targets. For example, the CodeGreen Scorecard provides regular performance updates to senior management at every resort. All event and banquet managers receive training in waste reduction practices though the Green Meetings & Events Certification Program. Given Caesars' 1.5 million square feet of convention space, this is already having a major positive impact.
Caesars Entertainment employees at the Bally's and Paris Las Vegas resorts implemented an impressive array of programs that have had a positive impact on the environment, and educated employees and the general public.

The following are additional examples of waste reduction initiatives at Caesars:
- Global nonprofit Clean the World collects and sanitizes soap, shampoos and other hygiene products for distribution to communities in need around the world. The group's goal is to help prevent diseases caused by inadequate supplies of hygiene products. Caesars and its housekeeping staff have recycled more than 110,000 pounds of lightly used soap and bottled amenities on behalf of Clean the World. These efforts have helped to improve health while simultaneously keeping more than 110,000 pounds of solid and liquid waste from going to landfill.
- During the past three years, Caesars has been a sponsor of Dartmouth College's Big Green Bus Tour Across America. Operated by 13 Dartmouth students, the converted Greyhound bus runs on waste vegetable oil and tours the country providing hands-on environmental education to communities. The bus made stops in five Caesars resort regions for demonstrations and to refuel. Caesars' sponsorship supports the costs of operating this "classroom on wheels," with its state-of-art sensors and tools designed to help individuals understand the inner workings of the bus and the importance of practicing conservation at home.
- At Harrah's Louisiana Downs Casino and Racetrack, the innovative CodeGreen team encouraged on-site horse trainers to use straw rather than wood shavings for stable bedding. This enabled a local mushroom farm to use the bedding and manure for compost. During the racing season the resort now converts nearly 400 tons of would-be waste into productive agricultural use.
We are dedicated to the Ak-Chin community, and have partnered with the community's sanitation team in hopes that we can influence the development of a recycling program at the household level. Supporting green initiatives and education is one of the ways we fulfill Caesars Code of Commitment.
